Con la tasa de explotación actual, las reservas medidas de carbón en Colombia aseguran más de 120 años de producción, suficientes para participar a gran escala en el mercado internacional y abastecer la demanda interna. Samacá, es el mayor productor de carbón del altiplano Cundiboyacense, el cual registra grandes reservas de carbón pero por su falta de tecnificación no permite tener un gran índice de explotación como las zonas del norte del país.
