dc.descriptionObjective: To describe the use of a myofunctional device as a stimulator of the affected side condylar growth in patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM).Methods: A myofunctional device was used in four patients with HFM, ages 10.8 ± 2.1 years who attended the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at the Santo Tomas University. This myofunctional appliance consisted of a simple flat tracks designed acrylic indirect asymmetrically in the vertical and sagittal planes.Results: It was observed a correction of facial asymmetry in two patients and two remained unchanged. This correction was achieved by an increase in condylar height in one case and the other by a dentoalveolar compensation.Conclusions: Early treatment in patients with HFM is effective and accurate if it has the support of patients and their guardians. In this study, it was seen a decrease in the difference in condylar height that although no statistically significant importance, is a relevant biological aspect. It also managed to reduce the inclination of the occlusal plane in one patient.en-US
dc.descriptionObjetivo: Describir los resultados del uso de un aparato miofuncional como estimulador del crecimiento condilar del lado afectado en pacientes que presentan Microsomía Hemifacial (MHF).Materiales y métodos: Se colocó un aparato miofuncional a cuatro pacientes con diagnóstico de MHF, en edades entre 10.8 ± 2.1 años que se encontraban en tratamiento en la Clínica de Labio y Paladar Hendido de la Universidad Santo Tomás. Este aparato ortopédico consta de unas pistas planas simples indirectas en acrílico diseñadas asimétricamente en sentido vertical y sagital.Resultados: Se observó una corrección en la asimetría facial de dos pacientes y en dos permaneció igual. Esta corrección se logró por un aumento en la altura condilar en uno de los casos y en el otro por una compensación dentoalveolar.Conclusiones: El tratamiento temprano en paciente con MHF es efectivo y eficaz si se cuenta con la colaboración del paciente y sus acudientes. En este estudio se consiguió una disminución en la diferencia en la altura condilar que aunque no presenta una importancia estadísticamente significativa, representa un aspecto biológico importante. Además, se consiguió disminuir la inclinación del plano oclusal en uno de los pacientes.[Gómez L, Padilla NK, Torres EA.
