Abstract

Introduction: the relationship between periodontal disease and complications in pregnancy has sparked growing interest in the scientific community. There are many publications related to the topic, however, there is no work that indicates which are the 100 most cited articles. Objective: Identify the 100 most cited articles in scientific journals on the devastation between periodontal disease and complications in pregnancy such as preeclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight. Materials and Methods: a bibliometric study was carried out using a sample that covered the scientific literature in the Scopus database from January 1996 to June 2023. Complemented with a questionnaire in Google Forms, where the information extracted from the source was recorded. of data. Variables, such as article title, journal name, country of publication, year of publication, and number of citations, were collected for subsequent analysis. Inclusion criteria were established for the selection of original articles that addressed this association, while studies with in vitro experimentation were excluded. Results: the 100 most cited articles in Scopus were identified, a notable increase in the production of articles was observed during the period between 2001 and 2008, with 68% of them, led by the work of Offenbacher (8%), the which showed a considerable number of citations in both Scopus and Google Scholar. The journals highlighted in this analysis were the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (25%) and the Journal of Periodontology (21%), with a predominance of publications of American origin at 46.9% in this field. Conclusions: a diversity of topics addressed in the selected articles was found, from epidemiological studies to clinical research, which underlines the multidimensionality of the relationship between periodontal disease and complications in pregnancy.
