Recognizing and describing an EFL Bachelor Program under the Distance Education Modality: A Case Study

| dc.description | La educación a distancia es una modalidad aún desconocida para muchas personas, lo que lleva a un malentendido y mal uso del término. Si bien los avances tecnológicos han mejorado muchos aspectos de la educación a nivel mundial, ha sido un tema controversial en el momento en el que las personas deciden cómo estudiar una carrera profesional. Sin embargo, la modalidad a distancia está tan calificada como cualquier otra modalidad pero con diferentes recursos y mediaciones. Para ello, el propósito de este estudio es describir los aportes de la Licenciatura en Lenguas Extranjeras Inglés de la DUAD - Universidad Santo Tomás bajo la modalidad a distancia a través de la metodología de un estudio de caso. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de entrevistas y un grupo focal realizado con egresados del programa y profesores; una revisión y comparación de planes de estudio con programas similares de otras universidades; y una consulta de documentos gubernamentales y oficiales que rigen los programas de licenciatura de inglés como lengua extranjera. El análisis de datos se realizó utilizando la metodología de codificación y categorización, clasificando la información y desglosándola para darle sentido. Luego de definir categorías, los hallazgos y resultados se teorizaron en los temas de interacción y sus recursos, la autonomía como una de las principales competencias de la modalidad, la democratización de la educación, las políticas, las suposiciones relacionadas con la modalidad, y algunas reflexiones relacionadas con la llegada de la pandemia en 2020; todo ello para validar y reconocer el programa de inglés como lengua extranjera en DUAD y su modalidad. | spa |
| dc.description.abstract | Distance education is a modality that is still unknown to many people, leading into a misunderstanding and misuse of the term. Even though technological advances have improved many aspects of education globally, it has been a controversial topic when people decide how to study a professional career. However, distance modality is as qualified as any other modality with different resources and mediations. For this, the purpose of this study is to describe the contributions of the Licenciatura en Lenguas Extranjeras Inglés at DUAD - Universidad Santo Tomás program under the distance modality through the methodology of a case study. The data was collected through interviews and a focus group conducted with former students and teachers; an inquiry and comparison of curricula with similar programs from other universities; and a consultation of governmental and official documents that rule EFL bachelor programs. The data analysis was conducted using the methodology of coding and categorization, classifying the information, and breaking it down to make sense of it. After defining categories, the findings and results were theorized into the topics of interaction and its resources, autonomy as one of the principal skills of the modality, democratization of education, policies, assumptions related to the modality, and some reflections related to the arrival of the pandemic in 2020; all of that to validate and recognize the EFL program at DUAD under study and its modality. | spa |
