dc.descriptionAntecedentes: Las infecciones orofaciales de origen odontogénico se asocian principalmente con infecciones pulpares y periapicales derivadas de caries no tratadas. Desde la perspectiva endodóntica, procesos como la periodontitis apical y el absceso periapical pueden diseminarse hacia los espacios fasciales y generar complicaciones que requieren manejo hospitalario. Objetivo: Determinar las tendencias de publicación relacionadas con la incidencia de infecciones orofaciales de origen odontogénico. Método: Se realizó un análisis bibliométrico mediante una búsqueda en las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE y Web of Science. Tras eliminar duplicados y aplicar criterios de elegibilidad, se incluyeron 11 estudios publicados entre 1996 y 2025. Los datos bibliométricos, epidemiológicos y clínicos se analizaron mediante frecuencias, porcentajes y medidas de tendencia central utilizando Microsoft Excel. Resultados: Los estudios evidenciaron una producción científica global, con predominio en Europa y crecimiento reciente en África y Oceanía. La mayoría correspondió a estudios retrospectivos u observacionales. La caries dental fue la principal etiología, afectando con mayor frecuencia molares mandibulares y los espacios fasciales submandibular y bucal. Las tasas de incidencia mostraron variabilidad entre regiones y la estancia hospitalaria osciló entre 3 y 7 días. Conclusiones: Se observó un aumento en la producción científica en las últimas décadas; sin embargo, la heterogeneidad metodológica entre estudios resalta la necesidad de estandarizar indicadores epidemiológicos y fortalecer las estrategias de prevención y atención odontológica.
dc.description.abstractBackground: Orofacial infections of odontogenic origin are primarily associated with pulp and periapical infections resulting from untreated dental caries. From an endodontic perspective, conditions such as apical periodontitis and periapical abscesses can spread into the fascial spaces and lead to complications that require hospital-based management. Aim: To determine publication trends related to the incidence of orofacial infections of odontogenic origin. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using a search of the PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. After removing duplicates and applying eligibility criteria, 11 studies published between 1996 and 2025 were included. Bibliometric, epidemiological, and clinical data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, and measures of central tendency in Microsoft Excel. Results: The studies revealed a global scientific output, with a predominance in Europe and recent growth in Africa and Oceania. Most were retrospective or observational studies. Dental caries was the primary etiology, most frequently affecting mandibular molars and the submandibular and buccal fascial spaces. Incidence rates varied across regions, and hospital stays ranged from 3 to 7 days. Conclusions: An increase in scientific output has been observed in recent decades; however, methodological heterogeneity among studies highlights the need to standardize epidemiological indicators and strengthen strategies for prevention and dental care.
