Abstract

The chronic use of the conventional cigarette is detrimental to health given its addictive nature; therefore, alternatives have been generated to minimize the impact of the toxic substances of the cigarette through the use of its electronic version. However, the impact on oral health and especially at the periodontal level of these devices is controversial, although it is known that they alter the gingiva and adjacent tissues. This study aims to evaluate the scientific evidence available in the literature on the relationship between the consumption of electronic cigarettes and periodontal disease. Materials and methods. Systematic review study through literature search in the Pudmed, Oral dentistry, Web of science, Science direct, Scielo, Scopus and oral dentistry databases. Analytical observational studies and clinical trials published in the last five years in English and Spanish were included. The extracted information was typed in a Microsoft Excel sheet where the methodological quality was analyzed and evaluated, Results. Exposure to electronic cigarettes slightly affects the periodontal level, however, given the quality of the scientific evidence, it is essential to have new longitudinal research to establish causality.
