Analysis of the learning environment for effective english teaching in the tourism sector in Boyacá

Abstract

A significant problem has been identified in the rural tourism of Boyacá: the low level of English language skills of the participants in the tourism sector, especially tour guides and service providers. This situation limits effective interaction with foreign tourists and reduces the possibilities of economic growth and international projection of the region. Although the demand for tourism services is growing, traditional teaching practices that do not respond to real contextual needs persist. The main objective of this study is to analyze and propose pedagogical strategies that favor the learning of English for specific purposes in the rural tourism sector, promoting meaningful, contextualized learning focused on effective communication in real-life situations. This research takes a qualitative approach based on analysis of a specific learning environment. Data collection techniques employed were observation, semi-structured interviews, and the design of contextualized pedagogical activities for participants involved in the tourism sector. Ethical issues such as informed consent and confidentiality were taken into consideration. The results show that the use of contextualized pedagogical strategies such as simulations, role plays and activities based on real tourism situations contributes significantly to the development of English communicative skills. Moreover, the learners’ motivation and participation increased, and the appropriation of the language in practical contexts was stronger. It is concluded that the implementation of context-based pedagogical strategies that are in line with the real needs of the learners enhances the effectiveness of English learning for tourism purposes, reinforcing not only the linguistic competence but also confidence and performance in real communicative situations.
