AGRICULTURA PERIURBANA: NUEVOS ROLES DE LA AGRICULTURA DE PROXIMIDAD EN LA PLANIFICACIÓN DE LAS PERIFERIAS URBANAS

El paisaje agrícola situado en las fronteras de la ciudad ha sido siempre víctima impotente de la expansión urbana a pesar de la importancia que debería reputársele a la agricultura desarrollada en este tercer territorio, área de transición entre lo rural y lo urbano. Esta práctica, recientemente denominada “agricultura periurbana”, se ha convertido en tema de estudio para investigadores y planificadores, que observan las interacciones entre la ciudad y el campo tratando de reconocer y canalizar el potencial implícito de este territorio. El objetivo del presente artículo es, por lo tanto, presentar los principales rasgos y oportunidades que ofrece la agricultura periurbana a través de la identificación de una serie de “estrategias agrícolas”, provenientes de algunas experiencias significativas capaces de aportar elementos válidos para incentivar futuras prácticas de planificación territorial en otros contextos periurbanos.ABSTRACTThe agricultural landscape located in urban frontiers has always been helpless victim of metropolitan sprawl, despite the importance that should have this activity located on such third land, focal area between rural and urban territory. This practice, recently labeled “peri-urban agriculture”, has become a subject of study in an attempt to discover and capitalize on the agricultural land potential adjacent to the urban centers. Thus, this work investigates the primary features of peri-urban agriculture, with the main objective of identifying the most relevant experiences related to the planning of the agricultural territory surrounding metropolitan centers in order to recognize recent experiences where peri-urban agriculture has become a mechanism to coordinate economic and social activities and also a practice integrated with other activities aimed to valorise local resources. Consequently, research aims to identify “agricultural strategies” that can bring added benefits from the identification of the most relevant project elements that support future and hypothetical practices of territorial planning in various forms capable of playing a role in the social and political sphere.
