La bioética es un vocablo presentado por el especialista norteamericano
Van Rensselaer Potter (1911-2012). Este término ya había sido presentado en 1927 por el pastor protestante, teólogo, filósofo y educador alemán Fritz Jahr Potter, quien igualmente realizó trabajos académicos
sobre el cáncer y el cultivo del humanismo mediante la exaltación de los
valores éticos. La palabra bioética, de origen griego, posee dos grandes
concepciones: bios = vida y ethos = ética. Su significado etimológico sería,
entonces, ética de la vida. Según el Diccionario de la Real Academia de la
Lengua Española (DRAE), la bioética se define como “disciplina científica
que estudia los aspectos éticos de la medicina y la biología en general, así
como las relaciones del hombre con los restantes seres vivientes”.
Abstract
Bioethics is a word presented by the North American specialist
Van Rensselaer Potter (1911-2012). This term had already been introduced in 1927 by the German Protestant pastor, theologian, philosopher and educator Fritz Jahr Potter, who also did academic work
on cancer and the cultivation of humanism by exalting the
ethical values. The word bioethics, of Greek origin, has two major
conceptions: bios = life and ethos = ethics. Its etymological meaning would be,
then, ethics of life. According to the Dictionary of the Royal Academy of
Spanish Language (DRAE), bioethics is defined as “scientific discipline
who studies the ethical aspects of medicine and biology in general as well
like the relations of the man with the other living beings ”.
