Este artículo examina la respuesta emocional de Jesús ante la muerte de Lázaro en Juan 11,33-38 como un eje hermenéutico privilegiado para el diálogo interreligioso y la iniciación cristiana de catecúmenos de origen budista en Lampang, Tailandia. Mediante un análisis exegético de la perícopa joánica, se argumenta que la agitación interior y el llanto de Jesús no constituyen meras reacciones afectivas, sino manifestaciones teológicamente significativas de una compasión encarnada que integra dimensiones cristológica, antropológica y soteriológica. El estudio contrasta esta configuración bíblica de la compasión con las nociones de dukkha y karuṇā en el budismo theravada, caracterizadas por el cultivo del desapego y la ecuanimidad, así como con la reinterpretación mahāyāna de la compasión en la figura del bodhisattva, entendida como disposición altruista a asumir el sufrimiento ajeno para facilitar su liberación. La lectura comparativa permite identificar convergencias éticas y divergencias ontológicas relevantes para los procesos de inculturación y para la elaboración de propuestas catecumenales contextualizadas. A partir de ello, se propone un marco teológico-pastoral para la iniciación cristiana en contextos budistas, fundamentado en la hermenéutica del encuentro, la escucha dialógica y la integración crítica de elementos de interioridad. El estudio concluye que la humanidad compasiva de Jesús ofrece una categoría teológica robusta para la mediación pedagógica y mistagógica en escenarios interculturales marcados por tradiciones budistas theravada y mahāyāna.
Abstract
This article investigates Jesus’ emotional response to the death of Lazarus in John 11:33-38 as a privileged hermeneutical locus for interreligious dialogue and Christian initiation of catechumens of Buddhist origin in Lampang, Thailand. Through an exegetical analysis of the Johannine pericope, the study argues that Jesus’ agitation and tears are not merely affective expressions but theologically charged manifestations of an embodied compassion that integrates Christological, anthropological, and soteriological dimensions. This biblical configuration of compassion is contrasted with the Theravada Buddhist notions of dukkha and karuṇā, which emphasize detachment and equanimity, as well as with the Mahāyāna reinterpretation of compassion through the bodhisattva ideal, understood as an altruistic commitment to assume the suffering of others to facilitate their liberation. The comparative analysis reveals ethical convergences and ontological divergences pertinent to inculturation processes and to the development of contextually grounded catechumenal frameworks. On this basis, the article proposes a theological–pastoral model for Christian initiation in Buddhist contexts rooted in dialogical hermeneutics, critical inculturation, and integrative practices of interiority. The study concludes that Jesus’ compassionate humanity constitutes a robust theological category for pedagogical and mystagogical mediation in intercultural settings shaped by Theravada and Mahāyāna Buddhist traditions.
