Structure, anti-structure and the world-system in an alternative Community. The case of the “hippies-koguis” at the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

| dc.description | Using the concepts of structure, antistructure, liminality and world-system, this paper analyzes some representations related to the “hippie-koguis”, a name that has been attributed to a hippie community in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Colombia), founded in the early 1970s near a Kogi indigenous settlement. These communities are imagined as projects “outside the structure”, “anti-systemic”, or “alternative”, representations which should be questioned, since the people who enact this type of projects are clearly identified through some of the roles and identities established by the social structure. On the other hand, in their search for changes and admiration for a certain difference, these projects pretend to be inspired by “other cultures”‒in this case the indigenous‒, mistakenly assuming that indigenous peoples are radically separated from the Western system. It also becomes evident that the discourses and intentions of individuals who wish to get out of the modern capitalist system cannot be understood without considering that very system itself. Finally, it is argued that communities which are said to oppose social structure, tend to structure themselves as time goes by, usually for economic and political reasons. | en |
| dc.description | Utilizando los conceptos de estructura, antiestructura, liminalidad y sistema-mundo, este ensayo analiza algunas representaciones a propósito de los “jipi-koguis”, nombre que le ha sido atribuido a una comunidad hippie en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Colombia), fundada a principios de la década de los setenta cerca de un asentamiento indígena kogui. Este tipo de grupos se plantean como proyectos “por fuera de la estructura”, “antisistémicos”, “alternativos”, lo cual es sometido acá a un análisis crítico, ya que los sujetos que hacen parte de estos grupos pueden ser claramente identificados a través de roles y posiciones dentro de una estructura social. Por otro lado, en su búsqueda de cambios y admiración por una cierta diferencia, este tipo de proyectos pretenden inspirarse en “otras culturas” ―en este caso la indígena―, presuponiendo equivocadamente que estas están radicalmente separadas del sistema moderno occidental. Se demuestra además que los discursos e intencionalidades de los sujetos que buscan salirse del sistema occidental y capitalista no pueden entenderse por fuera de ese mismo sistema. Finalmente, argumentamos que este tipo de comunidades, aunque dicen oponerse a la estructura social, tienden a estructurarse ellas mismas a medida que pasa el tiempo, generalmente por razones económicas y políticas. | es |
