| spa |
| dc.description.abstract | In orthodontic treatment, arches made of NiTi alloys are used. These arches generate forces that are directed by the brackets and transmitted to the Dentoalveolar Unit (UDA), composed of the periodontal ligament (PDL), the tooth, the cortical bone, and the trabecular bone. Due to their shape memory characteristics and sensitivity to specific temperatures, these arches cause the UDA to experience stresses resulting from the thermal gradient caused by food intake during treatment. Therefore, this study investigated the influence of temperature on the biomechanical behavior of the UDA of an upper central incisor when using NiTi arches through finite element simulations. A three-dimensional model of the UDA was created from computed tomography scans, and external elements (bracket and orthodontic arch) were included, taking into account the shape memory properties of the arch. Then, maximum Von Mises stresses and deformations were evaluated. The results revealed that maximum stresses increased by approximately 5% when the arch was exposed to 60°C compared to exposure at 37°C. These findings imply potential additional benefits for the patient, as small additional displacements are achieved during treatment. | spa |
