Abstract
This study was conducted as a research auxiliary within the framework of the macro-project “Relationship between leafcutter ants and soil ecosystem services in the El Charco-Oasis wetland, Villavicencio, Meta.” The work contributed to the analysis of the potential influence of leafcutter ants on some physical and hydrological properties of the soil in the El Charco-Oasis urban wetland, an ecosystem relevant for environmental regulation and biodiversity conservation.
Soil sampling and analysis were carried out in areas with and without the presence of ants. Variables such as gravimetric moisture, porosity, texture, and structural stability were evaluated using the percentage of water-stable aggregates (%WSA) and the weighted average diameter (WAD). These indicators allowed for the exploration of possible variations associated with the burrowing, removal, and redistribution of soil particles.
The results allowed for the identification of descriptive trends related to differences in some physical properties, particularly in the spatial heterogeneity of porosity and in indicators of structural stability. However, the two-tailed Mann-Whitney U test did not reveal statistically significant differences between the evaluated groups (p > 0.05). Due to the exploratory nature of the study and the limited sample size, the results should be interpreted as associations and not as evidence of causality.
In this sense, the study provided an approximation of the possible role of leafcutter ant bioturbation in the physical organization of the soil and highlighted the importance of further investigating these interactions through more robust experimental designs. The results provided a basis for future research focused on the management, conservation, and restoration of urban wetlands.
