Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Japan faced not only an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe but also a profound transformation of its social, emotional, and cultural fabric. The consequences extended beyond physical and biological damage caused by radiation, leaving a deep imprint on the nation's collective memory and influencing its contemporary identity. The survivors, known as hibakusha, endured lifelong medical conditions and social discrimination, while Japanese society as a whole was compelled to process the trauma through symbolic reconstruction. Japanese culture has channeled this suffering through art, literature, manga, education, and various commemorative practices. These expressions have helped preserve the memory of the events, shaping a strong pacifist consciousness and a collective resilience that continues to resist forgetting.
