Nuevo Palacio Municipal de Acacias

Abstract

The New Municipal Palace of Acacías project proposes the reconstruction of the civil and symbolic power of the municipality’s founding center, affected by the destruction of the former city hall. The proposal goes beyond resolving an administrative program and instead seeks to reactivate urban life and recover the civic identity of the place through an architecture that respectfully engages with heritage, public space, and the historical context.

Through the preservation and adaptation of a house with heritage value, the project is organized as a system of volumes articulated by axes, structural bays, and voids, in which a central plaza acts as the heart of the complex and as an extension of the public realm. Inspired by references such as Alvar Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall and Rafael Moneo’s Murcia City Hall, the building positions itself opposite the church with an attitude of balance and respect, avoiding formal competition while reinforcing its institutional character.

The project constructs a spatial narrative that links past, present, and future (church, park, and municipal palace), understanding architecture as an instrument of reconciliation between memory, citizenship, and territory, and as an urban gesture capable of restoring the civic, representative, and collective role of the center of Acacías.
