Through visits to different cities, the exercise focused on direct observation of architecture, urban space, and the relationship between history, materiality, and ways of inhabiting the city. The main analysis focused on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, examining its urban context, its role as a covered public space, and its architectural and constructive features. The study highlights the use of iron and glass as structural elements and their importance in shaping a space that integrates commerce, circulation, and permanence. The proposal goes beyond resolving an administrative program and instead seeks to reactivate urban life and recover the civic identity of the place through an architecture that respectfully engages with heritage, public space, and the historical context. Through the preservation and adaptation of a house with heritage value, the project is organized as a system of volumes articulated by axes, structural bays, and voids, in which a central plaza acts as the heart of the complex and as an extension of the public realm. Inspired by references such as Alvar Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall and Rafael Moneo’s Murcia City Hall, the building positions itself opposite the church with an attitude of balance and respect, avoiding formal competition while reinforcing its institutional character. This direct experience showed me that architecture is not understood solely from a technical perspective, but also through a critical observation of space, its proportions, materials, and context. This trip reaffirmed the importance of connecting theoretical knowledge with the real-life experience of the built environment. Seeing up close how so many architectural styles, such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque, coexist in Italy taught me that good architecture does not reject the past, but rather engages in dialogue with it. The main objective of the activity was to contrast theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with the built reality, exploring the evolution of Western urbanism and sustainable architecture. Through an itinerary covering cities such as Rome, the Vatican, Naples, Pompeii, Capri, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Genoa, Portofino, Milan, the Northern Lakes, Verona, Venice, Padua, San Marino, Gubbio, Perugia, and Assisi, diverse architectural typologies and their relationship with the landscape and history were examined. The case study of the Roman Colosseum is highlighted, analyzed as a landmark of public engineering and a symbol of power through the use of arches and vaults. Furthermore, significant urban contrasts were addressed, ranging from the extreme adaptation to the aquatic environment in Venice to the cosmopolitan verticality of Milan and the topographic integration in Cinque Terre. Through tours and inquiries from citizens of these cities, we obtained dates of events, measurements of their buildings, and the various forms they have used to construct their projects. Additionally, it underscores key learnings on sustainability, innovation, and cultural integration, which significantly enhanced the professional and creative development of the students.
