This article examines the relevance of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy to contemporary feminism, as distinct from the author’s personal views. The central aim is to analyze the utility of concepts from the Philosophical Investigations (PI)—such as language games, rule-following, and forms of life (Lebensformen)— in deconstructing essentialist views of identity and gender. It examines the influence of Wittgensteinian praxis on Trächtler’s notion of “patterns of life” to challenge essentialism regarding human nature, and on Butler’s use of the notion of technique to propose gender as a performative and iterative identity, which shifts the focus away from the “transcendental Self”. It is concluded that Wittgensteinian philosophy allows the debate on gender to be shifted from the metaphysics of essences to the grammar of social practices, suggesting that identity is constituted through “moves” within a linguistic community supported by hinge beliefs.
