| dc.description.abstract | Handgrip strength is widely used as a clinical marker of global muscle health and frailty in older adults, yet its relationship with lower-extremity function may differ in physically active populations. This study aimed to examine the association between absolute and relative handgrip strength and lower-extremity functional performance assessed by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) in physically active older adults. Cross-sectional correlational study including 70 community-dwelling older adults from two community programs (USTA and INDER Piedecuesta). Handgrip strength was assessed using a hydraulic JAMAR® dynamometer and lower-extremity function using the SPPB (balance, gait, and five-times sit-to-stand). Physical activity was estimated using the short IPAQ (METs). Multivariable regression models were fitted for total SPPB (primary outcome) and gait score and sit-to-stand (secondary outcomes), adjusting for age, sex, BMI, and total METs; robust HC3 standard errors were applied. Relative handgrip strength was not significantly associated with total SPPB or secondary outcomes after adjustment. Age showed an inverse association with total SPPB and gait score. Conclusion: In physically active older adults, absolute and relative handgrip strength were not associated with SPPB-based lower-extremity function, whereas age was the main determinant of functional performance. | |
