Percepción sobre la gingivitis y periodontitis de personas con fibromialgia: un estudio cualitativo

Introducción: La fibromialgia, es un trastorno crónico que causa dolor generalizado y fatiga, ha sido vinculada a problemas de salud bucal como la gingivitis y la periodontitis. El estrés, ansiedad y depresión juegan un papel importante en la salud bucal de estos pacientes. Objetivo: Evaluar la percepción sobre la gingivitis y periodontitis de personas con fibromialgia que asisten al grupo de apoyo Créeme fibromialgia/Colombia y Fibro Valientes Santander y consultorios particulares. Materiales y métodos: Estudio cualitativo, en el que se evaluaron a 12 pacientes a quienes se les realizaron entrevistas para conocer sus percepciones sobre estas enfermedades bucales y posteriormente se realizaron exámenes clínicos periodontales. Resultados: De los 12 pacientes evaluados se encontraron que 10 de ellos presentan alguna alteración periodontal, también se puede resaltar la relación de la fibromialgia en la salud mental, gran parte de los pacientes presentan una tendencia a aislarse y expresan que se conjuga con la depresión; En el ámbito de la salud bucal la mayoría de las pacientes procuran mantener buenos hábitos de higiene bucal, sin embargo rechazan la visita al odontólogo por el pánico que les causa el ruido de los aparatos y las incomodidades propias de la atención al odontólogo Conclusiones: La fibromialgia se ha asociado con un mayor riesgo de desarrollar enfermedades bucales. Esta conexión posiblemente esté dada a relacionarse con el componente emocional como el estrés crónico y la hipersensibilidad que padecen los pacientes con fibromialgia que puede afectar en el desarrollo y progresión de las enfermedades de las encías.

Introduction: Fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder that causes generalized pain and fatigue, has been linked to oral health problems such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Stress, anxiety and depression play an important role in the oral health of these patients. Objective: To evaluate the perception of gingivitis and periodontitis of people with fibromyalgia who attend the support group Créeme fibromyalgia/Colombia and Fibro Valientes Santander and private clinics. Materials and Methods: A mixed study evaluated 12 patients who were interviewed to learn about their perceptions of these oral diseases and subsequently underwent periodontal clinical examinations. Results: Of the 12 patients evaluated, it was found that 10 of them present some periodontal alteration, we can also highlight the relationship of fibromyalgia in mental health, most of the patients have a tendency to isolate themselves and express that it is conjugated with depression; In the field of oral health, most patients try to maintain good oral hygiene habits, however, they refuse to visit the dentist because of the panic caused by the noise of the appliances and the inconvenience of attending the dentist Conclusions: Fibromyalgia has been associated with an increased risk of developing oral diseases. This connection may be related to the emotional component such as chronic stress and hypersensitivity experienced by patients with fibromyalgia that may affect the development and progression of gum diseases.
