Las fuentes tipográficas, grupos de caracteres o sistemas, como las hemos
llamado anteriormente, se vinculan con otras para dar lugar a las familias
tipográficas. Si bien es cierto que existen varias clasificaciones y que incluso
se les tilda de innecesarias, es importante considerar que para el diseñador
gráfico en formación es valioso identificar las características formales que
hacen que una familia tipográfica difiera de otra. Ahora bien, también existe
la superfamilia, que está “formada por docenas de fuentes relacionadas con
múltiples pesos y/o anchuras, a menudo con versiones con y sin remates”
(Lupton, 2014, p. 50), como sucede con la tipografía Rotis creada por Otl
Aicher hacia 1989.
