Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand the experience of disenfranchised grief due to the death of a pet among young adults in Villavicencio. It was grounded in a qualitative approach under the interpretative paradigm, a phenomenological-hermeneutic epistemology, and a narrative design. The participants were three young women between 18 and 28 years old who had lost their pets within a period ranging from one month to one year prior to the interview. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, which were organized and analyzed using a categorization matrix. The results show that the participants considered their pets as family members with roles such as "daughter" or "sister," fulfilling emotional support functions grounded in Bowlby’s attachment theory. Likewise, the death constituted a trauma, approached from a Freudian perspective, where helplessness, paralysis, and strangulated affect became evident. Faced with the pain of the loss, the participants reported experiencing social invalidation from their environment, which led them to isolate themselves, engage in self-censorship, and experience feelings described by Worden, such as persistent guilt and deep sadness. However, through private and memorial rituals, conceptualized by Doka, the participants were able to dignify their loss. Finally, it is concluded and discussed that there is an urgent need to destigmatize this form of grief, contributing to regional mental health and calling for a sensitive, empathetic clinical practice regarding multispecies relationships.
