ABSTRACT

This research arises from the issue related to the dissolution of the envelope as an integral component of the formal structure of the building—a phenomenon that has led to a loss of coherence and architectural unity in contemporary design processes. In many cases, the envelope becomes an independent element, guided by aesthetic or technological criteria, and disconnected from the functional, spatial, and social needs of the building. Through a theoretical and critical reflection, this work addresses the causes that have led to this disconnection, such as the lack of articulation between the components of the project during the design process, the influence of digital trends that prioritize visual appeal over structural logic, and the disconnection between the envelope and the social or ritual functions inherent to architecture. In response, the objective is to restore the role of the envelope within the formal structure of the building, proposing it not only as a physical boundary or aesthetic expression but as an active component that responds to context, spatial functions, and user experience. The project proposes design guidelines that seek to establish a conscious relationship between the envelope and the other parts of the building, ensuring compositional coherence, functional integration, and a positive impact on the architectural experience of space. In this sense, it aims to reclaim the envelope as a fundamental part of contemporary architecture, going beyond its understanding as mere cladding.
