(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2024-12-13) Rozo García, Eddy Susana; Eugenio Quintero, Daniela Natalia; Torres Ayala, Isis Karina
This study explores the influence of non-structural elements (NSC) on the natural vibration period of earthquake-resistant buildings with combined structural systems, using buildings located in Bucaramanga, Colombia as a case study. Through a comparative analysis, we seek to identify how the inclusion of NSCs impacts the dynamic behavior of these structures, based on models developed with the ETABS software and on previous studies carried out by [1]. The research follows a quantitative approach, modeling seven representative buildings from the previous study, where the inclusion of NSCs was considered. The results obtained were compared with those presented in [1], to evaluate the consistency and variability in the conclusions. The results indicate that, in line with the observations of [1], the inclusion of NSCs has a notable effect on reducing the natural vibration period of buildings. On average, a significant reduction of 43.81% was observed in the models that included NSC, which highlights the importance of considering these elements in the evaluation of the seismic behavior of structures. However, it is important to interpret these findings in the context of the simulations carried out, which provides a basis for future research that delves into the interaction between NSCs and earthquake-resistant design.

Percepción de la calidad del agua en Boyacá
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2024-12-06) Naizaque Galindo, Jeimy Katherine; Acosta Castellanos, Pedro Mauricio; Universidad Santo Tomás
The user’s perception of drinking water quality is a personal assessment of the characteristics and properties of the water supplied to the household for consumption and daily use. This assessment is based on organoleptic factors such as taste, colour and smell, as well as related aspects in perceived quality, safety, confidence and possible health impacts, which are related to previous consumer experiences. Essentially, this is an opinion formed from the appearance of drinking water and perception of possible risks associated with its consumption. For the study on the perception of drinking water quality, surveys were applied directly to users in the municipalities of Duitama, Ramiriquí, Sogamoso, Tunja, Tibaná and Ventaquemada, in the department of Boyacá. These surveys were designed around the above factors, thus providing descriptive statistics and analysis. Technical knowledge about drinking water quality is key to fostering a more informed perception and understanding of factors influencing user behaviour, particularly their confidence in and use of tap water for human consumption. Community involvement in monitoring drinking water quality is essential, as community members are the main beneficiaries of a clean and safe water supply. The research aims to develop a more comprehensive approach to the service of water supplied for consumption, assessing potential quality risks and ensuring that public opinion is taken into account throughout the entire drinking water life cycle.

Monitoreo Cuenca Rio Chicamocha Área de Influencia en Sogamoso
    (Universidad Santo Tomás, 2024-12-03)
The main objective of this research article is to gather information on vitally important aspects, such as the characteristics of water, its quality, quantity and type of pollutants; in addition, the activities present in the area of influence. To do this, various digital tools were used such as Google Scholar, research journals from different universities (including those of the USTA), Corpoboyacá and the website of the Government of the Department of Boyacá, among other sources of information. The information consulted was subsequently filtered, resulting in only the relevant data being presented in this document. To do this, data tables and various maps were created using the ArcGIS application, which represent the municipalities of the Boyacá department through which the Chicamocha River flows. This facilitates the identification of the sites where a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) could be implemented, which makes it possible to identify the areas with the greatest contamination and thus establish the necessary measures to reduce the present contaminant load. On the other hand, a map is made of the municipalities that have the Chicamocha River as a source of drinking water supply, whether primary or secondary; a fact of great importance that allows us to understand the impact generated by the activities carried out by human beings in relation to the water resource; guaranteeing the quality of the water and its adequate use; everything mentioned above seeks to respond to the need to generate awareness about the effects generated by the inadequate management of wastewater and its repercussions on the environment.

The relevance of the study of porous concrete in Civil Engineering is significant, mainly in the search for sustainable and efficient solutions for its elaboration and implementation. In this framework, the research is proposed with the objective of evaluating the different behaviors of porous concretes according to their different compositions. By characterizing the sample, not only is the suitability of slag examined as a coarse aggregate material, but also its mechanical properties are determined, such as compressive strength and wear resistance, thus guaranteeing the quality of said concretes. Porous concrete is considered an innovative solution for the sustainable management of rainwater, especially in urban areas where natural infiltration is limited by impermeable surfaces. This material stands out for its high porosity, which allows water to filter through it, decreasing surface runoff. Within this research project, slag, a byproduct of the metallurgical process of steel purification, is used due to its granular structure and its ability to improve the mechanical strength of the material. Furthermore, the use of such aggregate contributes to environmental sustainability by recycling waste material and reducing the need to extract natural resources; it also provides more appropriate management of excessive rainfall events. This type of concrete is made with cement, slag, little or no fine aggregate and water, resulting in a hardened material with connected pores that allow efficient filtration of rainwater. This sustainable alternative is preferably used in regions with high rainfall and in areas such as parking lots and bike paths, which reduces the need for conventional drainage systems. In addition, it improves safety by reducing the accumulation of water on traffic surfaces.
