The coking process, while fundamental to the industry, involves a fairly intensive use of water at various stages. This resource is essential for activities such as coal washing, coke and gas cooling, and the cooling of auxiliary equipment. In this sense, water is not just another input, but a key element for the entire system to function correctly. However, this high consumption also prompts reflection on how it is being used, especially in a context where the efficient management of natural resources is increasingly important. From this dependence on water arises another situation that cannot be overlooked: the generation of effluents with a considerable pollutant load. These include organic compounds such as phenols and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as toxic inorganic substances such as cyanides and ammonia, in addition to suspended solids. If these wastes are not treated properly, they can generate significant negative impacts on the environment, affecting water sources and nearby ecosystems. Therefore, the management of these effluents becomes a critical aspect of the process. In this context, this thesis, developed as a monograph, is presented as a response to this problem. Its main objective is to identify technical optimization strategies that reduce water consumption and minimize pollution associated with the effluents from the coking process. To achieve this, a detailed analysis will be carried out based on scientific literature and specialized databases, in order to understand the current state of the processes and identify real opportunities for improvement. Finally, the work aims to propose concrete solutions that integrate the use of advanced technologies, the optimization of operating parameters, and the implementation of efficient water treatment and recirculation systems. The expected result is a compilation of technical recommendations that contribute to balancing process productivity, compliance with environmental regulations, and economic sustainability. In this way, it seeks to contribute to a more responsible industry, aware of the impact it generates on its environment.

Evaluación de la infraestructura peatonal en las rutas de acceso al Hospital Internacional de Colombia y a la Clínica Foscal Internacional, mediante variables de eficiencia y confort
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-06-22) Ospino Mercado, Jorge Ivan; Duran Rojas, Sandra Marcela; Universidad Santo Tomás
This study evaluated the pedestrian infrastructure along the access routes to the Hospital Internacional de Colombia (HIC) and the Clínica FOSCAL Internacional, in the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Area, through efficiency and comfort variables. The objective was to determine the Pedestrian Level of Service (PLOS) of these routes and to identify the critical segments that limit safe and timely access to healthcare services. Methodologically, two approaches were integrated: the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM 2010), which assesses the operational efficiency of pedestrian flow based on density, available space, flow rate, and walking speed; and the Sarkar methodology, which evaluates comfort and safety according to physical, physiological, and psychological attributes. Both results were combined through a two-dimensional rating matrix. Data collection was carried out in the field through pedestrian counts, geometric measurements, and checklists, covering nine segments in the FOSCAL area and six in the HIC area. The results showed a level of service of E–F according to HCM 2010, indicating congestion and unstable or critical flow, compared to a level of B–C according to Sarkar, corresponding to a comfort perception ranging from good to acceptable. The integration in the matrix placed the overall performance in the E–F × B–C combination, with the most critical segments being T9 in FOSCAL and T2 in HIC. The discussion highlights a dissonance between the low operational performance and a relatively favorable perception, which may conceal critical structural deficiencies in environments that demand high accessibility standards. It is concluded that physical infrastructure constitutes the main limitation to hospital pedestrian mobility; therefore, priority interventions are required to improve the continuity, safety, and functionality of the access routes.

Over time, the machinery used in construction has undergone significant transformation. In its beginnings, the works were executed mainly by human and animal force, using basic tools such as levers, ropes, pulleys and wooden rollers. Despite their technical limitations, these instruments managed to build important old structures, although the process was slow and physically demanding. The main and one of the most important changes came with the industrial revolution, a period in which steam-powered machines emerged, capable of transforming thermal energy into mechanical energy. This allowed for the advancement of pumps, industrial equipment, locomotives and vessels, boosting industrialization and improving production capacity and transport. As a result, the contractile processes became more efficient and dynamic. In the 20th century, the incorporation of internal combustion engines gave rise to heavy machinery such as excavators, cranes, tractors, concrete mixers and loaders, among many others. Over the years, these equipment have been perfected becoming more powerful, safe and specialized, allowing specific activities such as earthmoving, compaction, demolition and paving to be carried out with greater precision. In conclusion, the evolution of machinery has made it possible to optimize construction processes, increasing productivity and performance, reducing physical effort and facilitating the execution of large-scale works worldwide
