El departamento de Putumayo hace parte de la región amazónica colombiana al suroccidente del país (véase mapa 1) y se divide geográficamente en dos unidades morfológicas denominadas comúnmente alto y bajo Putumayo. El alto Putumayo corresponde a la región comprendida desde el flanco oriental de la cordillera Oriental hasta el piedemonte amazónico; el bajo Putumayo cubre toda la llanura amazónica. El valle de Sibundoy se ubica en la esquina noroccidental del alto Putumayo (véase mapa 2) y comprende los municipios de Santiago, Colón, Sibundoy y San Francisco (véase mapa 3). El vallado se encuentra rodeado de páramos y comprende un área de 463.8 km2 , donde predominan los ecosistemas de sabana y de bosque andino (Marín, 1993).

Abstract

The department of Putumayo is part of the Colombian Amazon region in the southwestern part of the country (see map 1). region in southwestern Colombia (see map 1) and is geographically divided into two morphological units commonly referred to as the upper and lower Putumayo. The upper Putumayo corresponds to the region the region from the eastern flank of the Cordillera Oriental to the Amazonian foothills. the Amazonian foothills; the lower Putumayo covers the entire Amazonian plain. The Sibundoy valley is located in the northwestern corner of the upper Putumayo (see map 2). Putumayo (see map 2) and includes the municipalities of Santiago, Colón, Sibundoy and Sibundoy, Colón, Sibundoy and San Francisco (see map 3). The fence is surrounded by moorland and covers an area of 463.8 km2 , with a predominance of moorland ecosystems. where savanna and Andean forest ecosystems predominate (Marín, 1993).
