Abstract

The estimation of available bandwidth is a fundamental parameter for the proper functioning of any data network and is studied by researchers around the world in order to have this information to improve the operation of various network applications as level compliance. of service, network management, real-time traffic engineering, network attacks and admission control. This document presents a study of available applications for measuring the bandwidth of a network that operate under the Linux operating system. For the development, an investigation of information was carried out in different sources to show the antecedents about the study of said parameter; Subsequent to this, information from documents and researches of authors found in IEEE Xplore and books that are based on its content in the study of this variable were taken into account. Following this, from tests on a model (Testbed) that recreates the characteristics of a network, a comparison was made of each tool in order to demonstrate its behavior, measured variables, usability, advantages and deficiencies. Taking this reference into account, priority was given to the applications that show bandwidth measurement more adequately, more exhaustive tests were performed to make comparisons between each one.
