Diseño del Plan de Gestión Integral de Residuos Sólidos para Italcol S.A. Planta Cota, Cundinamarca-Colombia

Abstract

The following project arises in response to the need from the senior management to comply with legal regulations related to the proper management of solid wastes, and in this way demonstrate their commitment to the environment and the sustainable development. The production plant of ITALCOL S.A. company is located at Km 4 on the Bogota-Medellin road, municipality of Cota-Cundinamarca The project was divided into four stages; in the first part, the bibliographic review was carried out with the help of the databases of the entities with greater recognition in solid waste management, such as the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), based in Copenhagen, and the Technical Association for Waste and Environmental Management (ATEGRUS), as well as the revision of some scientific magazines and internet consultations. For the second stage, an initial diagnosis of the company was made in regard to the generation, storage and final disposal of solid waste through the identification of generation sources, quantification and characterization of the solid wastes generated and the identification of the most relevant environmental aspects and impacts in relation to waste, in the third part was made the design of the solid waste management plan by gathering information from the previous; and finally, the conclusions and recommendations were made according to the results of the implementation of the solid waste management plan. Based on the results obtained, in accordance with the proposed objectives, there is evidence of a better environmental awareness by the workers and a greater commitment to order and cleanliness in their jobs. This is reflected in a better segregation of waste, generating a decrease in waste disposed in the landfill and an increase in waste with a usable value. Finally, in terms of hazardous and special waste, although not many are generated, they began to be treated with greater rigor since an inadequate management of these can generate negative repercussions in the company.
