Variables asociadas al fracaso de los implantes colocados y rehabilitados en la universidad Santo Tomás Floridablanca entre los años 2006 y 2012

Abstract

Introduction: the concept of "osseointegration", as the direct fixation of the implant with the surrounding bone seems to be the most important characteristic to affirm the long-term report of the clinical success of dental implants. However, despite the high success rate, implant failure has been reported. Objective: To identify the variables related to the failure of implants placed and rehabilitated at the Santo Tomas University of Floridablanca between 2006 and 2012. Materials and method: 150 clinical histories of patients attended in the postgraduate course of oral rehabilitation of the Santo Tomas University were selected corresponding to this period of time (years 2006 to 2012) between which they were treated with dental implants, taking into account the information provided regarding the surgical protocol and prosthetic treatment used during the design and preparation of the rehabilitation established for improvement of the functionality and aesthetics of each patient. Results Among the study sample, 345 implants were reportedly placed and rehabilitated, of which 32 (11.1%) failed during the osseointegration period, rehabilitating 313 dental implants. Conclusion: The clinical indication during surgical planning is of great relevance in order to select the implant with the appropriate configuration for the given case. Considering the implant length and diameter as the most critical factor, accompanied by prosthetic planning, anatomical location and biomechanical behavior in order to ensure the success of the procedure.
