(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-07-21) Ruiz Vega, Einer Jose; Larrota Forero, Rafael; Universidad Santo Tomas; https://scienti.minciencias.gov.co/cvlac/visualizador/generarCurriculoCv.do?cod_rh=0001521455; https://orcid.org/0009-0005-7379-3093
The management of construction and demolition waste (CDW) represents one of the construction sector's major environmental challenges, owing to the high volume generated and limitations regarding its handling and recovery. Against this backdrop, this research aimed to design a strategy for a progressive transition toward a circular economy in CDW management in Medellín, Colombia, focusing on effective waste recovery under real-world technical, economic, and institutional conditions. The study employed a mixed-methods approach—qualitative and applied in nature—integrating a bibliographic and bibliometric review, an analysis of the current regulatory framework, a local case study, a diagnosis of the existing CDW management system, and a comparative analysis of international experiences. This approach facilitated a multidimensional understanding of the issue and established a solid foundation for formulating the proposal. The results revealed that, despite theoretical and technical advancements in the circular economy, its implementation within Medellín's construction sector remains limited, with a linear model based on final waste disposal still predominating. Furthermore, technical, economic, institutional, and cultural barriers hindering the adoption of recovery practices were identified, alongside weak coordination among the stakeholders involved in CDW management. Based on these findings, a strategy was formulated comprising operational, technical, and organizational components; it encompasses on-site management, waste recovery, stakeholder coordination, and monitoring through indicators. The proposal incorporates strengthening elements such as quantified targets, a pilot implementation model, a collection and recovery center, and a coordination platform, enabling its application under real-world conditions and its evaluation through performance indicators. It is concluded that the transition to a circular economy in construction and demolition waste (CDW) management is feasible in the context analyzed, provided a progressive approach is adopted that considers specific local conditions and fosters the integration of various sector stakeholders. In this regard, the research contributes both to the academic development of the subject and to the formulation of practical solutions that support the sustainability of the construction sector.

La Palizada village, located in the municipality of Ituango (Antioquia), faces a longstanding challenge in accessing potable water. Complex geographical conditions, along with rural isolation and limited infrastructure, have hindered the community’s sustainable development. This document presents a technical proposal aimed at designing and planning the construction of a community aqueduct, grounded in participatory processes, environmental responsibility, and alignment with local needs. The project is based on a thorough territorial diagnosis, a hydrosanitary analysis of the area, and the implementation of the Technical Regulation for the Potable Water and Basic Sanitation Sector (RAS), adopted by the Ministry of Economic Development through Resolution 1096 of 2000. This regulation outlines the technical requirements for the design, construction, and operation of aqueduct systems, seeking to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and service quality. In accordance with these guidelines, hydraulic calculations were conducted, budget estimates were tailored to the rural context, and key structures—such as the intake chamber, storage tank, and gravity-fed distribution network—were pre-dimensioned in harmony with La Palizada’s physical and social reality. Beyond a technical solution, this work embodies a commitment to collective well-being, water justice, and community autonomy. The methodological design seeks to strengthen the connection between engineering, territory, and citizen participation, positioning the project as a replicable alternative for other excluded rural contexts. Thus, the proposed community aqueduct not only aims to fulfill a basic need, but also to contribute to the structural and sustainable transformation of the territory.

To optimize the structural and economic performance of constructions, and leveraging advancements in material technology, Universidad Santo Tomás has launched the research project “SIAC.” This project primarily aims to study the behavior and application of synthetic fibers in concrete, evaluating their impact on the mechanical and structural properties of elements. The goal is to identify solutions that improve durability, reduce costs, and shorten execution times in construction projects. The project was initiated with the premise of advancing the design and construction of more efficient buildings, reducing both the weight and dimensions of structural elements, which would save space and costs. After a preliminary analysis and a review of international studies highlighting the benefits of using synthetic fibers in structures such as tunnels and pavements, the team decided to explore their potential as structural reinforcement for residential buildings. Although this material had not been previously used in such structures, the decision was made to develop an experimental design based on prior research, particularly in collaboration with the University of Michigan, a pioneer in the implementation of synthetic fibers in concrete. Under the direction of Dr. Victor Lee, a researcher at the university, initial hypotheses were developed, and material characterization began for mix preparation. Four different mix designs were created by students under the supervision of university faculty and laboratory technicians, ensuring compliance with relevant technical standards to obtain precise results. The mixes varied in the amount of fiber added, starting with a reference mix without fiber and then incorporating 4, 8, and 12 kg/m³ of synthetic fiber to evaluate the influence of these variations on the mechanical properties of concrete through specific tests. The results obtained confirmed the hypothesis that incorporating synthetic fibers can enhance the characteristics of concrete, allowing for reduced cross-sections and lighter structural elements without compromising compliance with the design standards established in the NSR-10. Furthermore, this approach contributes to reducing total project costs, demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of using synthetic fibers in the construction of residential buildings.

The following document was carried out with the purpose of analyzing and comparing in a methodological way the constructive techniques used in the construction of the Matrix Handle of the Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá, EAAB, with the objective of improving the practices for the installation of drinking water pipelines in the area of direct impact of the project. Pipeline construction can be carried out using two main methodologies: open trench and trenchless, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The open trench method of pipeline construction is a traditional methodology that involves digging trenches to lay the pipelines and then backfilling the area. On the other hand, the trenchless pipe jacking method of pipeline construction is characterized by its ability to install or rehabilitate pipelines with minimal excavation. The present work uses a quantitative approach by determining a sample given by the use of simple random sampling to a total population of monthly work reports to which a data collection instrument is applied, resulting from the operationalization of the variables addressed in the theoretical framework. Finally, it is concluded that the choice between open trench and trenchless construction depends on factors such as the available budget, the installation environment and the need to reduce the impact on the community. While open trench may be more economical, the trenchless methodology offers significant advantages in terms of sustainability and reduced disturbance to the population.

Centro recreacional para el municipio de Barrancabermeja, Santander
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2023-12-04) Bendeck Castro, Carmen Sofía; De la ossa Gordon, Ana María; Narváez Manrique, Jorge Alberto
Design of a recreational center in the municipality of Barrancabermeja, Santander, projected in the immediate area to the San Silvestre swamp. It is designed to provide the community with comfortable spaces for outdoor recreation, leisure and relaxation to share with family and friends. Typological references were taken from regional and international recreational centers which were analyzed from the territorial, formal, functional and technical components to define the architectural program. From a theoretical reference point, passive or active bioclimatic strategies were established to respond to a physical-spatial problem of the city taking into account the particular environmental characteristics of the environment. This is due to the fact that the municipality does not have efficient spaces for the type of recreation of the region and that in turn they are suitable for warm humid weather, ensuring comfort within the project spaces. To determine the location of the project and its capacity, the geographical, socio-cultural and economic context of the municipality was analyzed. This equipment is designed to receive all types of families, specifically for the population of strata 1, 2 and 3 as these have the highest demand and the supply of recreational centers is poor compared to the population that requires it. Finally, within this research we studied physical determinants such as orientation, accessibility, topography, size, uses, among other.

The 21st century has witnessed the emergence of new technological advances for the management of the different phases in which a construction project is developed, namely: Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance. In this sense, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of the technologies that has most impacted the Architecture, Engineering and Construction sector (AEC) in recent decades. BIM is a methodological approach that optimizes risk analysis by providing all the information related to the project throughout its entire life cycle. It constitutes a fundamental tool for planning and controlling the construction process in the stage that follows the approval of the designs and precedes construction. Through the information generated by the BIM models, tasks such as construction planning, coordination of the different work teams, simulation of construction processes, among other preliminary activities, can be carried out, which allows detecting and correcting problems before starting construction work. In the pre-construction stage, BIM plays a fundamental role in the administration of the data relevant to the materials and equipment required for the execution of the work. Likewise, it facilitates the planning of the tasks to be carried out and the management of the associated economic resources. Based on these precepts, this thesis compiles the general concepts, standards and applicability of BIM worldwide, in order to propose a strategy for its implementation within the AEC sector in Colombia, particularly, in relation to the phase of pre-construction of the projects, once the designs are approved for their execution. This methodological strategy is based on the guidelines of the international standard ISO 19650 and is adapted to the Colombian environment through the incorporation of the BIM Kit, a tool developed by the BIM Forum Colombia for the implementation of BIM in the country.
