Survey on Machine Learning and Deep Learning Applications in Livestock and Biomedical Research
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-01-19) Mejia Espitia, Julian Arturo; Paez Casas, Deisy Carolina; Universidad Santo Tomás
Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have emerged as transformative technologies across livestock and biomedical research, enabling advances in disease detection, animal health monitoring, genetic selection, and reproductive evaluation. In dairy production, ML/DL techniques have enhanced the early diagnosis of subclinical mastitis [9]; [19]; [48], lameness [2]; [29]), and infectious diseases in calves ([12]), offering non-invasive and cost-effective alternatives to traditional methods. These technologies have also improved genomic prediction strategies, combining deep learning with genomic BLUP frameworks ([21]; [33]) and providing explainable classifiers based on whole-genome sequencing ([19]). Furthermore, DL has been successfully applied to cattle identification [3]; [28]; [41]), feeding behavior monitoring [4]; [49]), reproductive assessment of bovine oocytes ([34]; [5], and carcass quality grading ([20]; [17]; [23]). Beyond livestock, biomedical research has benefited from DL in medical imaging, genomics, and disease surveillance ([14]; [18]; [47]). Despite remarkable progress, challenges remain in terms of data quality, generalization across farms, interpretability, and ethical implications ([30]; [35]; [32]). By integrating AI with precision livestock farming and biomedical practices, interdisciplinary collaboration can foster more sustainable, accurate, and welfare-oriented systems.

    Resolución Eficiente de Horn-SAT mediante Algoritmos Bottom-Up y Top-Down
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2025-06-25) Cardenas Torres, Jacson Ferney; https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4079-383X
Propositional Horn satisfiability (Horn-SAT) is fundamental in artificial intelligence, representing a pillar in main fields: (i) query/answering propositional logic programs, (ii) unit propagation in modern SAT solvers, and (iii) modeling through directed hypergraphs (And/Or-graphs). Horn-SAT constitutes the most prominent tractable problem characterized by formulas with Horn clauses containing at most one positive literal, reducing complexity from exponential to linear. Although W.F. Dowling and J.H. Gallier (1984) developed a pioneering Linear Bottom-Up (LBU) algorithm, it presents the fundamental limitation of inferring almost all logical consequences regardless of the specific query, being impractical for expressive logics where it generates potentially infinite models. Previous efforts on linear top-down algorithms have resulted incomplete or technically insufficient, leaving a critical gap in the literature. This work formulates and implements a basic version of the Top-Down (LTD) algorithm for Horn-SAT without considering cycles, solving fundamental deficiencies of previous approaches through query-driven marking strategies. The main contribution consists in offering a correctly specified implementation of the basic top-down approach along with an exhaustive comparative analysis that demonstrates when each strategy is superior. Experimental evaluation uses parametrized Horn formulas as benchmarks (complete, incremental, and matrix) that expose challenges inherent to the Horn class, demonstrating that relative efficiency depends fundamentally on topological characteristics: LTD outperforms LBU in incremental structures by effectively restricting the query-driven search space, while LBU retains advantages in configurations where recursion overhead impacts LTD's practical performance.

The purpose of this work was to develop the modeling and control of an annular flow valve that contributes to the filling of tank flow for the water supply station in the Codito 2 neighborhood in the city of Bogotá. In this project, the operation of the annular flow valve was designed, model and verified with the aim of designing different control models that would allow to improve the performance of the valve, specifically the opening percentage in relation to the flow reaching it. This work observed the effect of water flows between 13 L / s and 78 L / s (verified from the station sensors), during a normal working hour. Likewise, the valve opening percentage was analyzed and recorded for the range of flows mentioned above, obtaining results that indicated a proportional behavior in the valve, with which the operation of a proportional, integral, and derivative controller was subsequently designed and verified (PID), a controller based on lag and lead compensation, and finally one based on state spaces. For the case of this report, it will focus more on the development, analysis, and comparison of each of the types of controllers than on the system model. Although, the necessary equations were also analyzed and developed to be able to be modeled in the program, which led to a simulation using the tool that integrates the program; simulink, with which it was possible to verify the operation of each controller visually.

Processing control has increased in recent years, being presented in many industrial processes, as the mixing process of gas and liquids for level and temperature control of a tank with specific features provided depending on the application of the process. In this research, the maintenance, automation, and temperature and level control for an industrial mixing process were developed. Maintenance was realized to guarantee the safety of the process, being necessary to clean the pipes, and replacing elements present with failures. Besides, an automation process using the GEMMA and GRAFCET guidelines was implemented through a Honeywell HC900 DCS, allowing the implementation of stops in the initial state, preparation mode, normal production, emergency stop, among others, being programmed in function block diagram language. A SCADA system was implemented for real-time supervision of the system and display of alarms caused by sensors or actuators failures. Finally, a control system that aims to maintain the temperature and level of the water at the setpoints established was implemented. The controllers were designed as SISO systems due to the strong correlation of the coupled variables established (H/Qc and T/Qh). Process models were established through experimental tests by superposition and approaching the data got with the toolbox SISOTOOL of the software Matlab. The industrial process was carried out under real conditions by integrating the automation of the system and the temperature and level controllers designed. The control of the mixing process was validated through its implementation in real-time, guaranteeing the desired settling and overshoot time values, in addition to rejecting the disturbance generated by the coupled flows. Control data were obtained by DCS. The DCS was in charge of automating the process, allowing supervision through the SCADA system and automated operation in safe conditions, corrective and preventive maintenance being key when guaranteeing the operation of the plant elements and being able to supervise process variables.
