La Cátedra de la Paz se ha consolidado como un tema de estudio necesario para sociedades que han armados a lo largo del mundo. Aunque las primeras experiencias de Cátedras de la Paz nacen como una alternativa desde la ciudada- nía, con el tiempo se han configurado como una herramienta utilizada por los Gobiernos para abordar confrontaciones armadas de larga du- ración. De esta manera, se han transformado en métodos para inten- tar construir escenarios de paz en los que participan la ciudadanía, los actores en confrontación y la institucionalidad. Así pues, el propósito de este capítulo es analizar los alcances y los orígenes de las experien- cias vividas en Sudáfrica, Venezuela, Puerto Rico y Nicaragua, para luego estudiar el impacto que dichas cátedras tuvieron en los proce- sos que desarrollaron sociedades violentas en su transición hacia la construcción de escenarios de paz.
