Introduction: The use of diagnostic imaging allows for the creation of appropriate treatment options through the analysis of oral cavity hard tissues in 2D and 3D, in addition to its use in health science research. Objective: To interpret the strengths and limitations of using diagnostic imaging as input for the development of research processes through undergraduate and graduate thesis developed over the last 5 years at the Santo Tomás University of Bucaramanga. Materials and methods: A qualitative study from the interpretive paradigm was carried out, based on a documentary review of 13 undergraduate theses, which were selected according to eligibility criteria. The analysis was done through inductive coding. The information was organized and systematized to create a codebook that included name, definition, dimension, and reference number. Results: The quantitative analysis of 13 theses revealed a predominance of studies that use conventional radiographs (66.67%). This analysis complements the data, revealing a macro￾theme of systemic barriers that weaken research, articulated in three categories: 1) deficiencies in the quality and availability of data, 2) capacity and resource gaps, 3) methodological weaknesses. In contrast, a macro-theme of latent potential was identified, evidenced in strengths such as the application of methodological rigor, the generation of clinical impact knowledge through advanced technologies (CBCT), and the exploration of new frontiers such as artificial intelligence. Conclusions: Diagnostic imaging research, driven by undergraduate students (53.86%), is limited by the lack of a repository and an interconnected cycle of data, resource, and training barriers. Therefore, capitalizing on the existing image collection requires a comprehensive institutional strategy that addresses these systemic challenges and fosters a robust research culture. Introduction: Traditionally, the training of health professionals has relied heavily on cadaver dissection. With the advancement of technology, new teaching methods have emerged, such as stereolithographic models, which offer an accurate three-dimensional representation of human anatomy and various pathologies. Objective: To design and validate a stereolithographic model developed from DICOM file segmentation for preclinical practice of maxillary sinus lift via transcrestal and lateral window approaches; implemented by second-year periodontics residents in 2024 at Santo Tomás University. Methodology: A diagnostic test evaluation study was conducted to validate a stereolithographic model developed through DICOM file segmentation. Cronbrach's alpha coefficient was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument. The sample was administered to three experts, comprised of periodontics graduate professors and 18 periodontics residents from the University of Santo Tomas. Results: The stereolithographic model was designed from DICOM files and improved following expert feedback, which highlighted deficiencies in the tactile fidelity of the bone and the realism of the sinus membrane. Modifications included a differentiated bone structure and a stained, more elastic sinus membrane. Final validation with periodontal residents confirmed the model's effectiveness, yielding high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.866 and 0.970) and a positive overall rating (median of 4.0), highlighting its high educational value, realism, and ease of use for preclinical practice. Conclusion: The stereolithographic model, designed from DICOM files and improved after expert feedback, proved to be an effective educational tool for preclinical sinus lift practice. Improvements included a differentiated bone structure and an optimized sinus membrane. Evaluation with residents confirmed its high effectiveness and educational utility, with excellent internal consistency and very positive perceptions.

Introduction: Different alveolar crest preservation techniques have been proposed to maintain the architecture of hard and soft tissues, with the ultimate goal of avoiding additional augmentation surgery, one of which is the use of a bone graft, which is classified as allograft, xenograft, alloplastic, and autograft. Objective: To analyze the evidence available in the scientific literature on the alveolar preservation of four materials used as grafts after tooth extraction without flaps published in the last five years. Materials and methods: Secondary source study, a systematic review of clinical trials published in English between 2019 and 2023 through the databases: Pudmed, Dentistry and oral science source, Web of science, Science direct, Scielo and Scopus. Articles including at least two types of bone grafts were included and a risk of bias assessment was performed using the Cochrane Collaboration guideline. Results: In general, the different investigations used similar populations, but they varied according to the types of bone graft evaluated and the type of measurement of alveolar preservation, which occurred in three ways, one through a histological analysis, another thanks to a periodontal probe or a caliper that directly measures the dimensions of the alveolar crest, and another consisted of a radiographic analysis. Conclusions: All the materials used as bone grafts help alveolar preservation after an extraction, however, more scientific evidence is needed to determine which of the materials obtains a better result.

Abstract Introduction: Dental implants are biocompatible devices whose function is to replace the root of a vital tooth. Currently, implantology is an innovative branch of dentistry, which is aimed at obtaining stability and comfort for patients, aimed at achieving osseointegration and functional biomechanics of the implant. However, dental implant failure is due to multiple reasons and conditions that can alter or modify the osseointegration of the implant, and this is the reason why it is important to know these factors and the patient's clinical conditions when planning the placement of a dental implant. Objective: To determine the factors associated with the failure of dental implants in the dental clinics of Santo Tomás University in the period of 2015-2020. Materials and methods: This research is a cross-sectional analytical observational study, the population was made up of the medical records of patients treated at the Osseointegration clinic of Santo Tomás University. An instrument was developed to collect sociodemographic variables and clinical variables; however, when carrying out the pilot test, the instrument was modified. The medical records that met the inclusion criteria were selected, after which, the information was systematized in an Excel file where the data was duplicated, ending with the statistical analysis with the Stata/MP statistical package. For univariate analysis, absolute frequency, percentage, and Shapiro Wilk were used. For bivariate analysis, the Chi2 test or Fisher's exact test, Student's T-test, or Wilcoxon's rank test was applied. For all tests, a statistical significance of p<0.05 values were considered. Results: Of 372 clinical histories, 17 histories with dental implant failures were observed. Mostly occurred in female patients in 70.59% (12), aged between 46 and 60 years. According to the periodontal condition, 47.06% of the patients presented gingivitis prior to the placement of the implants, the frequency of failures was given in preload with 82.35%, and most of the lost implants were positioned in the upper jaw. with a p= 0.290. Conclusion: Most of the implants studied failed in their preload period due to multiple factors that similarly predispose to their loss. Clinical and systemic variables of the patient such as the presence of mental disorders, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, bruxism, or the location of the implant in the upper jaw had a higher prevalence in the failures of these implants, however, this evidence does not was statistically significant enough. Cohort studies are recommended for longitudinal follow-up of implants and the inclusion of other possible variables that may be associated with dental implant failure.

A qualitative study was carried out from the perspective of phenomenology to describe the perceptions and expectations of three groups of individuals with different characteristics, namely, i) the group that would undergo an oral implantology procedure, ii) the group of those with dental implants without rehabilitation and iii) the group of people rehabilitated with an implant-supported and/or implant-retained prosthetic solution in the clinics of the Oral Rehabilitation and Periodontics Specialization of the Santo Tomás University, Bucaramanga section, during the first period of 2021, in which 11 people participated and the semi-structured interview was made as an instrument. The results show that, with regart to the first group of people, their quality of life, self-perception, security and confidence are affected by the absence of teeth and, therefore, they consider that this treatment would significantly improve their quality of life. Concerning the second group, the studies show that they had very high expectations in terms of function and aesthetics. Lastly, with respect to the third group, some of them reached their expectations and others were not so satisfied in cost-benefit ratio. Hence, it is concluded that function and aesthetics are present in each of the interest groups, that all people understand the necessity of caring for implants by means of hygiene elements and controls, and that people interviewed whom presented less realistic expectations are those that reported a higher cost-benefit ratio.

Background: The unidirectional association between cardiovascular disease (CVD) and periodontitis is characterized by the presence of periodontopathogenic microorganisms that induce an uncontrolled inflammatory immune response at the local level, which translocates the blood circulation, and increases systemic inflammation. Objective: To determine the association between self-reported risk conditions for developing periodontal disease and chronic events in the population resident in Santander. Methodology: Analytical cross-sectional study nested within the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological Study (PURE). Santander has 511 participants in the PURE cohort, eligible for the present study from whom follow-up information and chronic events (CVD and type 2 diabetes) were taken. A self-perception survey of oral and periodontal health was applied by telephone. The analysis was processed with STATA 12.0 software in descriptive terms, contingency tables for hypothesis testing and risk estimation through simple and multiple logistic models. Results: The response rate was 94.3%. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between high blood pressure (BP) and the last reason for consultation related to curative actions (30.1%), poor perception of oral health (64.7%) and gum alterations (38.8%). Being hypertensive denoted a risk of developing periodontal disease (OR 2.02 95% CI 1.21-3.37) and this was independent of demographic, socioeconomic and behavioral characteristics. Conclusion: ETS is significantly associated with self-reported risk conditions for periodontal disease such as having poor perception of oral health or signs of periodontal disease.

The diagnosis of periodontitis generates a variety of criteria that can lead to the clinician's decision being subjective. Deep learning as machine learning is a computerized tool that allows the information to be handled truthfully, quickly and in a timely manner, in addition to having a high degree of reliability and precision, providing new perspectives for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning. To develop a system for digitized periapical radiographic interpretation to support periodontal diagnosis based on Deep Learning: Phase I Radiographic criteria and supplies. The study population made up of a total of 727 digitized diagnostic images (periapical radiographs) stored in the USTA radiological center in the years 2019-2020. Exclusion criteria: Elongated periapical radiographic images, alveolar spaces that house implants. 727 images extracted corresponded to 72 subjects, 45 women (62%) and 27 men (38%). The average number of teeth contributed per person was 24.5 ± 4.4 teeth, on the other hand, the mean of dental loss was 7.3 ± 3.3 teeth. The metrics obtained are similar to other studies, thus we found that the inputs generated in Phase I are correct for use in Phase II, that is, to give continuity, for which only the observations generated in the population balance (in terms of sex distribution) and in the sample size (in terms of radiographic images). This neural network system is developed to identify teeth in their initial phase and will be of great help to the clinician, being able to process many images with specific criteria, supporting the diagnosis efficiently.

Introduction: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been introduced in periodontal therapy as an alternative treatment; Currently it has been used as a biostimulant in the regeneration of bone tissue, it improves the healing of soft tissues. Aim: The purpose of this work is to identify the scientific production of the use of PRP for treatments of bone defects and furca defects published in specialized journals in the period 2000-2019 through a bibliometry. Materials and Methods: the population is made up of all the scientific articles found in the electronic databases of the Santo Tomás University, Bucaramanga from 2000 to 2019 Selection criteria, inclusion criteria: articles contained in the electronic databases : Medline, Elsevier, Springer Link; of clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analysis, articles published between 2000 - 2019, articles published in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Exclusion criteria: articles that are not in full text, case reports, case series, narrative reviews. Results: Studies co-authored predominate. An average of five authors per article was registered. Regarding the academic training of the authors, it indicates that the majority had a master's degree and, secondly, a doctorate. 44 articles published between 2000-2019 were found. Although one of the search criteria was that the articles had been published between 2000 and 2019, from 2000 to 2002 no publications were found. Between 2016 and 2018, the largest number of publications was reported; in the years 2003, 2004 and 2011 the least amount of publications. the frequency of publications by country. India country the place where more research was carried out in this regard; 8 of the 44 publications used in this study were made. In Latin America, studies were reported in Brazil, Peru and Chile. Mainly articles published in English, made in 18 countries between 2000-2019, were found, but the frequency of publication increases as of 2012. Conclusions: the published literature is quite broad and heterogeneous in terms of authorship and the source of information. Co-authored studies predominate whose authors have different institutional affiliations and academic training. Regarding the source, the articles were selected from 31 international journals, which were indexed in international databases. The vast majority is located between the first and second quartiles. In addition, on average, they have a high impact factor in the SCImago evaluation of 2015 and 2018. As for the number of citations of the articles, in gray literature it is higher, almost triple the number of citations in the bases of data consulted.
