This study examines University Social Outreach at Universidad Santo Tomás in Colombia as a fundamental component of its educational mission. It seeks to explain how the institution positions itself as an active agent of social change beyond the classroom by engaging directly with local communities. The findings indicate that social outreach is not merely a collection of activities or isolated projects, but rather a comprehensive framework that integrates teaching, research, and social engagement. Using a participatory perspective, the study underscores the importance of sustained dialogue between the university and communities, fostering mutual learning and the collective construction of knowledge. A qualitative approach was employed, analyzing information from the Social Outreach unit’s institutional microsite and key university documents that define how social outreach is conceptualized within the institution. The results show that Universidad Santo Tomás has strengthened a model of social outreach consistent with its humanistic ethos, prioritizing human development, social justice, and the common good. The analysis further reveals that its programs are designed to transform social realities and reinforce community bonds through an ethical and solidarity-based rationale. In conclusion, social outreach emerges as a strategic mechanism through which the university fulfills its societal role: educating socially committed individuals, generating socially relevant knowledge, and actively contributing to solutions for the pressing challenges faced by communities.

The objective of this qualitative case study is to analyze the effects that the FTA has had on the Colombian countryside, in this case, on the peasant family economy of the potato sector in Tuta-Boyacá. In this sense, we seek to investigate the effects that the FTA has had on the peasant family structure, the labor market and its transformations in the social and cultural sphere. To this end, it is important to highlight the techniques used for data collection, which was guided by the construction of a conceptual framework. This, through semi-structured interviews, surveys, documentary review and participant observation, leads to a more holistic analysis of the transformation of the agrarian structure and its micro effects, which tend to disarticulate the subsistence economy, the labor markets and to problematize the stability of this type of economy due to the effects of generational replacement, land concentration, which is important for the production and reproduction of the peasant-producer family.

This article is a research project conducted for my undergraduate thesis in Sociology at the Universidad Santo Tomás, focusing on migrants to the United States who participate in the Au Pair program. The document aims to explore the perspectives and characteristics of individuals between the ages of 20 and 27 who choose to migrate through this option. Although the primary purpose of the program is childcare, the Au Pair program offers the opportunity to reside in the United States while performing childcare duties in exchange for housing, meals, and a weekly salary. Initially conceived as a cultural exchange, the program has evolved into a way to improve language skills and gain work experience. However, it presents challenges such as the lack of appropriate regulation in some countries, the failure to comply with working hours, and the uncertain position of Au Pairs within the host family. This research examines the motivations of the participants and the expectations of the host families, highlighting the tensions between the cultural experience and the labor responsibilities involved.

This research explores the impact of nostalgia on the adaptation process of Colombian international students in Melbourne, Australia. From a qualitative approach, migration is recognized as a complex experience involving grief, migratory stress, and sociocultural shocks. The findings reveal that nostalgia, mediated by memory and the development of adaptive strategies, plays a crucial role in migrants’ adaptation. However, the study also highlights a gap in the alignment of expectations between migrants and the social system, particularly regarding institutional support for the emotional dimensions of migration. This research emphasizes that nostalgia not only represents an emotional challenge but can also become a valuable tool for adaptation.

This research analyzes perceptions of how political and social conflicts in Colombia influenced the institutional and theoretical–curricular transformations of several sociology programs in universities across the country. Using a qualitative, historical–descriptive approach, the study explored the experiences and opinions of five sociology graduates from Colombian universities. The historical–descriptive perspective aimed to understand processes of change and continuity over time by examining the social, political, and cultural factors shaping the studied phenomena. To this end, a documentary review was conducted, along with semi-structured interviews with professors and graduates from Colombian institutions such as the National University of Colombia, Santo Tomás University, and the University of Valle. The findings show that political violence, student movements, and neoliberal reforms transformed the role of the university, turning it into a space for resistance, critique, and the production of socially engaged knowledge. Through the process of open coding, four central analytical categories emerged: political commitment, situated sociology, critical and formative value, and lack of visibility. These dimensions reveal the tension between academic autonomy, epistemic dependence, and the need to build a contextualized and transformative sociology. Therefore, it is concluded that sociopolitical conflicts, despite posing challenges to the discipline, fostered a renewal within sociology programs that consolidated the field as a critical, situated, and socially committed discipline.

This research arises from an interest in understanding the processes of political participation and identity construction of Wounaan Baud Mos women in the city of Bogotá. After experiencing forced displacement and migration from Colombia’s Pacific coast, these women have had to reconstruct their ways of life, organization, and leadership within urban contexts marked by inequality and exclusion. In a country shaped by armed, racial, and gender-based conflicts, Indigenous women emerge as political subjects who reconfigure territory through the body, the spoken word, and memory, contributing new ways of understanding peace, resistance, and citizenship. The study recognizes that Indigenous identity in the city is not preserved intact, but rather reconfigured through the tension between continuity and transformation. As Stuart Hall (1990) argues, identity is not a fixed state but a constant production; in the case of Wounaan women, this production is interwoven with ancestral memories, orally transmitted knowledge, werregue weaving practices, and everyday rituals that allow them to sustain their symbolic world within the urban context. In this sense, the research is based on a key premise: the political participation of Indigenous women is not limited to institutional or electoral spaces, but is expressed through community practices, acts of care, and the collective organization that sustains communal life. The study is developed under a qualitative and interpretative approach, grounded in Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology and ethnographic tools such as interviews, participant observation, and body mapping. These methodologies make it possible to understand women’s voices from their own positions of enunciation, recognizing them as producers of knowledge rather than merely sources of information. Thus, the analysis seeks to make visible how Wounaan women build their leadership and political participation through symbolic, affective, and territorial practices, and how these constitute a response to displacement and the coloniality that permeates their experiences. The theoretical framework brings together authors from decolonial studies, community feminism, and critical geography. From Guillermo Bonfil Batalla (1987) and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui (2010), identity is understood as a living process that persists in the face of the historical denial of Indigenous civilizations. With Gladys Tzul Tzul (2016), female leadership is interpreted as part of communal governance and the sustaining of collective life; meanwhile, Lorena Cabnal (2010) and Catherine Walsh (2007) allow for an understanding of the body–territory relationship as a political space that links gender-based violence with territorial dispossession. For their part, Escobar (2014) and Haesbaert (2011) broaden the notion of territory toward an ontological and relational understanding, in which urban space can also become Indigenous territory when inhabited through ancestral knowledge and memory. In the context of Bogotá, the Wounaan Baud Mos community faces multiple challenges, such as the invisibilization of their culture, economic precariousness, racial discrimination, and difficulties in maintaining communal networks. However, these women transform adversity into collective action through organization, weaving, the transmission of knowledge, and participation in intercultural spaces. Their everyday practices reveal that politics is also exercised from the intimate and the quotidian, where care, the spoken word, and spirituality become tools of resistance. This thesis seeks to analyze the political participation of Wounaan Baud Mos women by examining the reconfiguration of gender roles in the urban context and the processes of community leadership that have emerged within the community. Through a dialogue between decolonial theory and empirical experience, it argues that these women’s practices are not only survival strategies, but also forms of political and epistemological production through which they challenge colonial structures and propose alternative ways of inhabiting the world. The work is thus positioned horizontally alongside the women, aiming to recognize them as central subjects whose voices and existence are fundamental to the construction of life, culture, cosmogony, and connection with their ancestors, their territory, their spirituality, and their community.

This monograph examines the implementation of community mental health at Universidad Santo Tomás (Bogotá) through two extracurricular practices: Biodanza and theater. The introduction contextualizes the relevance of community mental health in university settings and the role of these practices in promoting student well-being. The methodology followed a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews and focus groups to explore pedagogical strategies, participants’ experiences, and perceived impacts among students and instructors. Findings show that both spaces encourage emotional expression, social support networks, and a strong sense of belonging. Biodanza fosters introspection and self-care, while theater strengthens oral expression, critical reflection, and recognition of otherness. The discussion emphasizes how these practices help reduce stigma and promote active community participation. Overall, the study concludes that both activities are valuable strategies for student well-being and recommends strengthening their institutional visibility and continuity.

Young people's lack of knowledge about the history of the conflict, the context of the signing of the agreement with the FARC-EP, as well as the role of violence in peacebuilding and the different expressions of gender identities and violence have been elements of reflection for the young people in the peacebuilding seedbed at the Rodrigo Lara Bonilla School. The purpose of this article is to highlight the contributions of epistemological and pedagogical processes to territorial peacebuilding in urban educational contexts, based on a case study of the Rodrigo Lara Bonilla School. The methodological approach taken was a participatory perspective based on Participatory Action Research (PAR), which allowed for the construction and ongoing feedback of the different pedagogical and thematic strategies that were developed with the participants over a period of nearly two years. To articulate the theoretical and methodological discussion on territorial peacebuilding from a restorative perspective, the postulates of Galtung (1990), Fisas (1998), and Muñoz (2001) were mainly addressed. In this way, the different reflections of the young people in the peacebuilding seedbed become references for discussing new forms, mechanisms, and pedagogical strategies for the prevention of violence and conflict in educational institutions based on their own practices.

This research aims to analyze the trajectories of psychoactive substance use among young adults at the Alcance Victoria rehabilitation center in Soacha, examining the processes of stigmatization they face, the social relationships they build in response, and the tensions between treatment models. Using a qualitative approach, the study includes a survey of twelve people from this center, two biographical accounts, a semi-structured interview, and the use of secondary sources such as the Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Mayor's Office of Bogotá. The results of this case study show different motivations that lead to the consumption of psychoactive substances, as well as the way in which consumption practices are carried out. Similarly, it accounts for the stigmatization faced by consumers and the repercussions that this can have on the people in their immediate environment. Finally, a comparison is made between religious and state treatment models, showing different perspectives of people in a state of consumption.

This monograph analyzes the impact of the Colombian armed conflict on kidnapping and homicide rates in the municipality of Algeciras, Huila, during the period between 2000 and 2007. The general objective is to determine how the violence perpetrated by the various armed actors affected the social, economic, and cultural life of the population of Algeciras. Specific objectives include identifying the figures and sociodemographic characteristics of the victims, establishing the main actors in the conflict present in the territory, and examining the resulting economic impacts, especially in the agricultural sector. The research adopts a hermeneutic-interpretive approach, supported by quantitative and qualitative analysis of data from the Observatory of Memory and Conflict of the National Center for Historical Memory (CNMH), complemented by documentary review and participant observation. The results show a significant increase in kidnapping and homicide rates during the period studied, primarily associated with the presence of the FARC-EP guerrillas and the dynamics of the armed conflict. Furthermore, a decline in the local economy was identified, particularly in agricultural activities, which affected social stability and the community's way of life. It is concluded that the armed conflict profoundly transformed the social structure of Algeciras, generating displacement, loss of human capital, and weakening of the community fabric, which accentuated the vulnerability of its rural population. Keywords: armed conflict, kidnappings, homicides, violence, Algeciras Huila.

This research analyzes the strategies of urban space appropriation employed by graffiti artists in Bogotá, with an emphasis on the routes taken in La Candelaria, Soacha, and Ciudad Bolívar. Through a historical and territorial analysis, combined with interviews with artists and observation of interventions, the study examines how graphic practices are articulated with the urban, social, and institutional conditions of each locality. The methodology is based on the notion of traversing the city as a way of producing knowledge and on Henri Lefebvre's theory of conceived, perceived, and lived space, which allows for the identification of how artists adjust their movements and intervention choices according to the visibility, surveillance, and mobility of the spaces. The comparison between illegal and legal contexts reveals that appropriation strategies depend on the degree of formality, territorial control, and the relationship with the inhabitants. The findings show that graffiti is not only a visual intervention but also a way of producing, perceiving, and experiencing urban space, generating local meanings and relationships with the city that vary according to the characteristics of each territory.

This research analyzes the influence of musical aesthetics and consumption on the construction of youth identity in Bogotá through a comparative analysis of the bands The Perro Boyz, Alegoría Punk, and Chucha during the years 2022–2024. Using a qualitative approach based on discourse analysis, interviews, and focus groups, the study examines the symbolic, sonic, and visual dimensions that shape the punk experience as a social, political, and affective practice. The findings show that musical aesthetics transcend the merely sonic sphere to become a form of resistance and collective expression among Bogotá‘s youth, where identities are marked by territorial anger, disillusionment, introspection, vulnerability as political strength, and irony and provocation as critiques of power. Furthermore, the results reveal that Bogotá‘s punk scene has consolidated as a network of meanings and emotions through which young people reinterpret taste, consumption, and belonging. In their everyday practices, youth find spaces of symbolic freedom, constructing mobile identities that resist cultural homogenization and affirm new forms of urban community.

This systematization analyzes the professional practice experience carried out at the Centro de Altos Estudios Legislativos (CAEL) of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia, within the framework of the Political Science and Government program. Its purpose was to critically reconstruct the institutional, formative, and methodological processes experienced, identifying the tensions between the ideal of rational bureaucracy —as proposed by Weber (1964)— and the real dynamics of legislative functioning. The methodological approach was qualitative, interpretive, and reflective, combining participant observation, documentary review, and critical systematization of experience. Analytical matrices and RAES records were used as tools for data collection and organization, analyzed through conceptual triangulation among empirical records and the theoretical frameworks of Weber, Ragin, Barragán & Torres, and Jara Holliday. The findings reveal that, although CAEL embodies a bureaucratic structure aimed at technical efficiency, informal hierarchies, disarticulated processes, and routine-based practices often limit interns’ autonomy and learning. Nevertheless, the systematization made it possible to recognize practice as a space for critical training, where reflection on experience becomes a tool for producing situated knowledge. In conclusion, the study shows how institutional configuration shapes political and technical formation while offering valuable insights into the relationship between knowledge, power, and bureaucracy within the Colombian legislative context.

Infraestructura para la movilidad en Bogotá: Impactos habitacionales de la construcción del Transmicable en San Cristóbal Sur, Bogotá

Urban infrastructure projects for urban development, such as the construction of the Transmicable (Transportation Line) in the San Cristóbal zone, southeast of Bogotá, have impacted residents of the affected households in the 20 de Julio, La Victoria, and Altamira neighborhoods. These projects resulted in the eviction of a predominantly elderly population without support from the institution in charge, the IDU, to provide them with relocation alternatives or housing valuation improvements due to the loss of their homes. This urban mobility infrastructure project has created problems in the dynamics of housing transfers. Through a mixed methodology, using database analysis and document review, semi-structured interviews, sector tours, and a focus group, the impacts on the dynamics of the intervened families are explored, especially the generational transfer of strata 1 and 2 housing. These residents have greater difficulty with residential mobility to relocate to another household, whether they own or rent. Ultimately, the Transmicable solves an urban mobility problem in the public transportation system by reducing travel times from home to Portal 20 de Julio, however, it does not reduce the impact on the affected residents.

This undergraduate thesis presents a systematization of experiences regarding the promotion plans implemented by the Faculty of Sociology at Universidad Santo Tomás during the second academic semester of 2023. Within the context of a historically significant and high-quality accredited faculty, the study examines three strategic lines: program promotion in high schools, alumni engagement, and dissemination of the Master’s program in Planning for Development. The systematization is structured around three methodological axes: participatory observation, data triangulation, and the development of an academic repository. Through a reflective approach, the project aims to understand, analyze, and critically assess academic outreach practices, strengthening institutional processes and contributing to the advancement of Tomasinian sociology at the national level.
