Logística y comercio electrónico como motores de competitividad en Brasil y Colombia
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-06-22) Hernández Becerra, Dayanna Carolina; Ramírez Castellanos, Diego; Universidad Santo Tomás
This paper analyzes logistics and e-commerce as drivers of competitiveness in Brazil and Colombia, with an emphasis on last-mile logistics and digital platforms as areas where this relationship is most clearly evident. Throughout the analysis, we examine how the growth of ecommerce in the region has been accompanied by digitization processes, the expansion of technology platforms, and new digital payment systems; however, it is also evident that logistics performance remains one of the main challenges in ensuring efficient deliveries and a satisfactory consumer experience. Similarly, the analysis examines certain limitations related to operating costs, transportation infrastructure, and urban congestion—factors that particularly affect Latin American countries. It also analyzes the incorporation of technologies such as artificial intelligence, fintech, and smart logistics systems within supply chains, highlighting their impact on process optimization and the operational efficiency of e-commerce. Furthermore, it is recognized that digital competitiveness also depends on broader structural factors, including human capital development, investment in innovation, and regulatory frameworks—areas in which both Brazil and Colombia face significant challenges. Finally, the study concludes that, although the competitiveness of e-commerce depends on multiple factors, last-mile logistics is a strategic component for strengthening the sector’s performance and competitiveness in the region.

Problem: In the context of the global circular economy, the recovery and subsequent export of these recyclable materials is presented as alternative; however, the metallurgical recovery sector in Colombia faces deep structural challenges, such as high levels of informality in the first links of the value chain, a marked absence of technical standardization in material classification, and a generalized lack of knowledge of the rigorous environmental and industrial regulations required by developed countries, which drastically restricts the competitiveness of national exports in the global market. Objective: To evaluate the export opportunities for Colombian recyclable scrap materials (ferrous and non-ferrous metals). Method: The research is descriptive with a qualitative approach and is methodologically developed through a documentary study based on the analysis of secondary information sources, using commercial intelligence tools such as the international statistical database TradeMap to evaluate trade flows, as well as an in-depth review of the current national regulatory framework, paying special attention to the quantitative restrictions of Decree 1182 of 2025 and the procedural requirements demanded by the Single Window for Foreign Trade —VUCE— for obtaining export licenses. Results: It was determined that copper and aluminum are consolidated as the growth drivers of the sector, with exports to China exceeding 387 million dollars in 2024 due to their critical role in the manufacture of clean technologies, while iron and steel scrap, mainly directed to Turkey, faces administrative restrictions through export quotas designed to guarantee the supply security of the Colombian steel industry. Discussion: It is concluded that the successful and sustainable insertion of Colombia into global recycling value chains does not depend on tariff reductions, but on the urgent professionalization and technical upgrading of the Classification and Storage Stations —ECA— in the national territory, which is essential to achieve the rigorous technical purity standards and international environmental certifications required by Asian and European buyers, thus ensuring that Colombia moves from exporting raw waste to providing high-value secondary raw materials within the framework of global industrial decarbonization.

Hubs logísticos de Brasil y su impacto en el comercio con Colombia
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 0010-06-26) Osma Durán, Aily Torcoroma; Zambrano Valdiviesco, Oscar Javier; Universidad Santo Tomas
This study analyzes the impact of Brazil's logistics hubs on the competitiveness of international trade with Colombia, focusing on the role of multimodal integration within logistics systems. The main objective was to determine whether the level of coordination among different transport modes influences logistics efficiency and international trade performance in both countries. The research was developed through a comparative analysis of the logistics structures of Brazil and Colombia, considering factors such as infrastructure, multimodal connectivity, logistics costs, and foreign trade performance. The study was supported by observations made during the International Seminar held in Rio de Janeiro, including a technical visit to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, complemented by a review of academic and institutional sources such as the World Bank, ECLAC, and ANTAQ. A descriptive and comparative methodology was employed, based on documentary analysis, direct observation, and the comparison of logistics indicators. Variables related to multimodal integration, operational efficiency, and international competitiveness were evaluated. The findings show that Brazil has developed a highly integrated network of logistics hubs, combining road, rail, and water transport systems, which contributes to lower logistics costs and more efficient cargo flows. In contrast, Colombia remains highly dependent on road transport and presents limited integration among logistics nodes, resulting in higher operating costs and reduced competitiveness. The discussion highlights that factors such as cargo volume and geographical conditions alone do not fully explain the observed differences. It is concluded that multimodal integration is a key determinant of logistics and trade competitiveness, positioning Brazil as a regional benchmark and emphasizing the need to strengthen logistics infrastructure, digitalization, and system integration in Colombia.

(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-06-05) Muñoz Bustamante, Laura Catalina; Piraquive Puerto, Fabio Andrés; Universidad Santo Tomás; https://scienti.minciencias.gov.co/cvlac/visualizador/generarCurriculoCv.do?cod_rh=0002172103; https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=_Od0OQoAAAAJ
The objective of this study is to optimize the process of recording and tracking multilateral submissions managed by the Internal Working Group on Institutional Affairs with Multilateral Organizations. It was found that the recording of verbal notes presented issues with traceability, duplicate files, and significant delays in accessing information, which hindered the timely preparation of diplomatic materials and strategic decision-making. To address this, a methodology was developed that included an assessment of the existing system, designing a standardized format, complemented by an operational manual that unifies classification and archiving criteria. Its implementation resulted in a 50 percent reduction in document search time and a significant improvement in archive organization, facilitating the retrieval of background information, the creation of briefing notes, and the monitoring of multilateral commitments. It is concluded that standardizing the process strengthens administrative efficiency and contributes to Colombia’s strategic positioning in multilateral dialogue and negotiation settings.

Business practice report carried out at Sergeng Ltda.: Strengthening commercial communication and customer loyalty through the implementation of a CRM system.
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-06-07) Solano Durán, Ivonne Natalia; Ramírez Castellanos, Diego; Universidad Santo Tomas
Sergeng Ltda., a Colombian company in the cleaning, security, and maintenance services sector, managed its business relationships using manual and disparate tools that led to scattered information, slow response times, and poor traceability in customer interactions, therefore, the objective was to implement a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, specifically the Zoho CRM platform, as a strategic tool to systematize business processes, centralize customer information, and improve the company's customer loyalty mechanisms, the methodology comprised four phases: an initial assessment of existing business processes through interviews and direct observation, a comparative evaluation of available CRM platforms, the configuration and customization of the selected system, and a pilot implementation with a representative sample of the customer portfolio. As a result, preliminary indicators from the pilot showed a number of improvements in the average response time to customer inquiries, in data centralization, and in the sales team's adoption rate of the platform, experience shows that the adoption of digital tools in SMEs requires both technical implementation and appropriate management of organizational change and user training, aspects that determine the sustainability of the CRM's impact over time.

The objective of this study was to analyze the Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) between Colombia and the United States as they pertain to the Colombian corn sector during the 2012–2024 period. To carry it out, specific objectives were set to identify the dynamics of domestic production, determine the behavior of exports and imports, establish the evolution of tariff quotas, and analyze the relationship between domestic production and imports from the United States. The research was conducted using a quantitative, descriptive, and analytical approach, with a non-experimental design and a correlational scope. Statistical data from official sources such as Agronet, TradeMap, DIAN, and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism were utilized. The results show that domestic corn production exhibited fluctuating trends, with advances in mechanization but without a sustained growth trend. At the same time, imports registered a significant increase, rising from 3.2 million tons in 2012 to 6.85 million in 2024, while exports remained at negligible levels. Furthermore, it was found that the United States has established itself as Colombia’s main supplier of corn, aided by the conditions set forth in the FTA and the phased elimination of tariffs. The discussion shows that the increase in imports has strengthened the country’s external dependence and created greater challenges for the competitiveness of domestic producers. In conclusion, NAFTA facilitated access to imported corn and benefited sectors that rely on this input; however, it also widened the trade deficit and highlighted the need to strengthen policies on productivity, modernization, and sustainability to improve the competitiveness of the Colombian corn sector.

The academic trip to Panama and my participation in the Latin American Congress on Logistics and Technological Evolution represented a unique opportunity to understand, through direct experience, how technology is transforming regional logistics. Beyond the concepts learned in the classroom, personally observing the Panama Canal, port operations, and logistics centers allowed me to identify real tensions between technological modernization and the job stability of thousands of workers. The acceleration of technological development in Panama’s logistics sector represents one of the most transformative contemporary phenomena in the Latin American economy (OECD, 2020). Panama, recognized for its strategic location and infrastructure connected to global trade, has progressively incorporated automated systems and Logistics 4.0 technologies, as highlighted in recent reports by ECLAC and UNCTAD (Katz, 2015; UNCTAD, 2021). While these transformations enhance competitiveness, they also generate significant social impacts, a notion consistent with the arguments of Autor, Mindell, and Reynolds (2020) regarding the labor implications of automation. During the congress, I had the opportunity to attend discussions in which experts celebrated advances toward Logistics 4.0, while others expressed concern about training gaps, the risks of technological unemployment, and the loss of traditional occupations. This combination of observation, analysis, and personal experience inspired a deeper reflection: digitalization is not neutral. Its technical benefits can ultimately generate social inequalities if principles of inclusion and continuous education are not incorporated. From this perspective, this essay examines how Panama’s technological acceleration is widening the digital divide and proposes reflections aimed at fostering a transition that is not only technologically advanced but also socially responsible and human-centered.

Informe de práctica empresarial realizado en la empresa Minerva Foods
(Universidad Santo Tomás, 2026-06-02) Bustamante Arenas, María Juliana; Canónigo Galvis, Alfonso; Universidad Santo Tomás
The internship took place at Minerva Foods, a company dedicated to the production, marketing, and export of meat. The company operates in several countries, and the internship was conducted in person in the city of Bucaramanga. The assigned position was Customer Service Intern in the Quality Department, and the primary responsibilities focused on the traceability of international orders, PQRS management, audit support, and technical translation. A current issue with weighing at the Bucaramanga Industrial Unit was identified, involving discrepancies in billing and an increase in complaints (PQRS) received by the company due to weight shortages caused by product shrinkage. A dynamic weighing model and a standardization matrix for technical shrinkage were proposed to optimize international billing and improve communication with the customer. This led to the conduct of a diagnostic assessment, an analysis of historical PQRS data, and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to achieve the integration of scales at the industrial unit. A shrinkage matrix was developed, taking into account variables such as time during transport, packaging, and product quantity, in order to estimate the weight after shrinkage. The goal is to achieve a result that, once implemented, will allow the company to transition from estimated data to actual data, thereby reducing failures in the logistics chain and strengthening customer confidence in the company through detailed reports on shipment traceability.

This project aims to propose an improvement plan for optimizing foreign trade processes in Rodamientos Transmisiones Grandes Marcas S.A.S., a company dedicated to the import and commercialization of industrial machinery parts in northeastern Colombia. During the professional internship, several issues were identified, including the lack of a structured foreign trade area, absence of control tools in import processes, operational dependence on a single role, and limited diversification of freight forwarders. These factors led to inefficiencies in logistics management, increased operational costs, and difficulties in decision-making. In response, an improvement plan is proposed, focusing on the creation of a foreign trade department, the design of a functions manual, the implementation of an import planning tool, the optimization of supplier and freight forwarder management, and the development of a cargo consolidation strategy aimed at reducing costs and improving operational efficiency. This project strengthens the company's organizational structure, enabling more efficient and competitive operations, while also contributing to the student's professional development through the practical application of International Business knowledge

During his professional internship at Huawei Technologies Colombia, the intern assumed operational leadership of the national transfer network, comprehensively managing 4 X-Dock warehouses and 12 Subcon warehouses. His role focused on ensuring the smooth flow of the supply chain, from the receipt of imports to final on-site installation. Under his supervision, inventory accuracy was monitored through the Blue Army methodology (blind count KPIs), return audits to the central warehouse were led, and the final disposal of surplus materials was coordinated through specialized recycling processes. A critical pillar of the management process was the administration of operational costs, strictly controlling the 14-day storage cycle in regional warehouses in order to avoid rental overcharges. In this context, it was identified that non-compliance and the lack of traceability among external carriers were putting the efficiency of the nodes at risk. In response, the intern designed and implemented an Improvement Plan for the standardization of delivery reports and route tracking. This project succeeded in synchronizing logistics operations with transportation, integrating security protocols for critical components and improving the reliability of material flow within the WMS system.

Professional internships are the most important stage in the learning process of any academic program. In my case, having the opportunity to complete them at Arus was where I first faced the working world. This was a challenge that, as time went on, became a learning experience that contributed to the development and discovery of certain skills I want to improve to be more professionally competitive. During this process, I gained a better understanding of how Arus operates, which helped me identify our position as a company within the technology solutions industry and how we are related to wholesalers, manufacturers, and other suppliers, as well as to our clients. Thanks to the above, I was able to identify both difficulties and opportunities.
